I couldn't help but think of this post today as I rearranged the furniture in my living room. Usually, my reason for doing it was to make it look like I did something. I had to empty out the china cabinet to move it (made it easy to dust the shelves). I had to empty my bookcases which caused me to take a look at the books I had in hiding.

As I was cleaning and thinking of what you wrote, I thought about a boss that kept moving me. Just as I cleaned up one area, and wrote a Standard Operating Procedure I'd find myself on the move again. I hated it until one day I thought maybe he is testing me. Through that experience I learned to keep everything I needed (pens, sticky notes, paper clips, and a stapler) in a carry box so I was ready to move.

That's the thought I keep in mind every time I rearrange, what if I had to move all of this stuff.

To my untrained ear, it sounds the same, focus forward, take small steps in that direction. The trick is getting other people to agree with the horizon or the big goal so that most of our baby steps are actually moving, not just treading water. Or in getting enough experience/perspective to see that the earth will turn and the sun will rise anyway, no matter the effort we put in it. As long as we keep dreaming that it can be better than it is, and we are willing to roll up our sleeves, whatever package you put that in, I believe.

The Cynefin framework has been profoundly impactful in the way I think about a great many things.

It's hard to pick out any one aspect of the framework or the Cognitive Edge learning. I really resonated with the complex domain and the fact that we should become more comfortable with being in a "fog" when dealing with complex environments. We also need to take appropriate actions to learn within those complexities.

LIke the description "twitch inducing." That sums up so much. And, yes, I do think a small amount of gloating with friends and trusted confidants is acceptable. But not too much.

I think it's fair to gloat with your friends for little bit, a group hug at least to celebrate! Then tell us the next thing you see!
